Jill and Zoe rescued and The Phantom apprehended

The Cage

The rescue of Jill Richards and Zoe Hardy turns the investigation into a direct confrontation with their captor, Ken Carlton. At a house reached through a lead connected to a delivery van, Eve Strong and her colleagues find evidence of the women’s confinement, locate them in a loft cage, and face Carlton when he returns. The operation brings the captives out of hiding, but the danger does not end with their discovery: Jill’s intervention is crucial to preventing Carlton from escaping or further harming Eve.

Background and the search

The rescue follows an investigation into women who disappeared after ordinary journeys through Sunderland. Becky Allsopp was last traced after arriving at Newcastle Central Station, travelling to Sunderland, and walking beyond CCTV coverage near the Stadium of Light. Louise Usher might walk home from the gym, take a bus, or occasionally use a taxi. Investigators suspected that the women had been taken into a vehicle, although no reports of shouting or screeching tyres had accompanied the disappearances. These separate uncertainties made transport and opportunity central to the inquiry.

Footage of Jill provided a more specific lead. After leaving a supermarket, walking past McDonald’s towards Roker Avenue, and briefly disappearing from view, she appeared on CCTV outside the Salvation Army. A showroom camera across the road recorded her checking the bus timetable and then flagging down a car. It had the shape of a black cab but no sign on its roof. That detail mattered because police had already warned the public to hail only white cars displaying a taxi sign. Jill’s recorded choice did not by itself identify the driver, but it strengthened the investigators’ suspicion that an apparent taxi could be used to approach or abduct women.

The immediate move on the house begins when Eve receives a call and recognises that the delivery van driver is the person they need to find. She tells Bill Nicol that she has the address and calls for a backup team. Eve, Bill, and Paul Forrester leave at once, while Gary Baxter is asked to arrange support. They drive through light traffic and approach the street carefully rather than racing up to the house, since Eve does not want to alert the suspect. The measured arrival gives way to a fast search once they are inside.

Evidence inside the house

Bill finds a key beneath a flowerpot beside the back door, and the officers enter. Their initial check of the downstairs rooms turns up nothing, so they continue upstairs. The main bedroom offers no immediate lead. In the spare bedroom, however, Paul finds a box of adult nappies beside another box containing several of the tunics worn by women the police have found. Eve recognises the clothing as proof that they have reached the right place and redirects the search towards finding the captives.

Bill’s discovery of a second, unusual bathroom adds to the evidence of confinement. Unlike the ordinary bathroom elsewhere in the house, this small room contains only a toilet and washbasin. Its door has a groove cut beneath it, and its window has been nailed shut and painted over. These features give the officers reason to search beyond the rooms they can see, but do not tell them where Jill and Zoe are. The decisive clue is overhead: Eve spots a hooked metal pole on the landing and a metal loop on a large loft hatch. Using the pole, she pulls down the hatch and then lowers the ladder. The team climbs into the loft, where a cage dominates the space.

The captives are found

Jill is inside the cage and asks for an ambulance for Zoe, who is unconscious beside her. Bill first unties Zoe and then releases Jill’s wrists from the sides of the cage. The order reflects the urgency of Zoe’s condition while also ending Jill’s immediate restraint. Eve calls Gary to request medical assistance and backup. She also arranges food for the women, a practical response that acknowledges their immediate needs as well as the scale of the emergency.

The rescue is not yet secure. Jill explains that her captor has gone out to get something with which to teach Zoe a lesson, and says that he has spoken of making them learn what pain is. When cooler air enters the loft, she clutches at Eve and warns that he is back. Her warning gives the officers little time to prepare. Eve signals for silence and recognises that the open hatch and ladder may make the returning man suspicious. Because the ladder creaks, a quiet descent is unlikely; she assigns the order—herself first, Paul second, Bill third—and moves quickly towards the ground floor.

Confrontation and outcome

Eve searches the rooms while Paul and Bill move through the house. In the dining room, drawn curtains obscure a deep windowsill. As Eve approaches the window, Carlton launches himself from the sill and knocks her down. The officers reach the room to find him behind her, holding her by the hair and threatening her with a knife. He orders them to count before opening the door again. Bill and Paul back away, and Carlton keeps Eve under threat until he hears the door close. The rescue team’s discovery of the captives has therefore shifted into a hostage situation, with Eve exposed and the others temporarily forced to withdraw.

Carlton calls the women his dolls and pushes Eve through the house towards the back door, where his black cab is nearby. Eve understands that if he gets her into the cab, she may be taken beyond the reach of her team. She pretends to stumble; when Carlton reaches to pull her upright, she strikes him with her head, causing him to drop the knife. Bill and Paul respond to the sound and come back into the hall. Jill, already making her way across it, takes an object from the kitchen worktop and strikes Carlton on the back of the head. He falls and lies still.

Bill goes to Eve, who is coughing and struggling to catch her breath; she asks for water, and he brings her a glass. The officers’ immediate priorities are now to get medical help and backup for the women and to secure the scene. Jill and Zoe have been found and released, while Carlton’s return has exposed him as the person behind their captivity. Jill’s intervention is the decisive reversal in the confrontation: the two women are no longer alone in the loft, and the captor who had controlled their movements is left on the floor as the rescue team regains control.
